The End of an Era

Just 3 months after the official celebrations of her Platinum Jubilee, the death of Queen Elizabeth brought to an end the second Elizabethan era for Britain. In another indication the reign of King Charles III has officially begun, his new royal cypher has now been unveiled today, 27 September 2022.

The Eurovision fans amongst the R&G team were happy to learn yesterday that next years’ competition is to be hosted here in the UK. Eurovision has provided us with hours (many, many, hours) of entertainment over the years, and yesterday’s announcement got us wondering about how the brand is protected and enforced around the world.

How did The All England Lawn Tennis Club secure a trade mark for its signature colours?

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (the “Club”) has owned multiple registered trade marks for the famous Wimbledon name and other prominent signs for some time. However, the dark green and purple colourway – which has been associated with the Wimbledon tennis tournament for over a Century – has only been protected as a registered trade mark in the UK since 2016.

Gold Standard trade mark practice for the Platinum Jubilee

Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-reigning monarch in British history on 9 September 2015, surpassing the previous record (of 63 years, seven months and two days) set by her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria. For some years now, the Queen has been the longest- living reigning monarch in the world. She passed a new milestone on 6 February 2022, which marked 70 years of her reign. Celebrations for her Platinum Jubilee are being held this week over a special four-day UK bank holiday weekend, from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June 2022.

Introduction to Trade Marks; Should you worry about them?

A trade mark is a sign (often a word) which does not describe goods or services but identifies the company selling the goods or services. When Ford sells a car or the Cambridge Judge Business School provides training, Ford and Cambridge Judge are trade marks which tell customers what characteristics to expect, based on their previous awareness of their products, reviews and marketing – High quality or low quality? Cheap or expensive? Reliable or unreliable? Delivered on time or late?

The General Court find meaning in MILEY CYRUS

Smiley Miley, Inc. (‘SMI’), the company owned by American singer Miley Cyrus, has won a six year legal battle to register the trade mark MILEY CYRUS in the EU. The General Court of the European Union (‘the GC’) issued its decisions on 16 June 2021, overturning the refusal of this trade mark application by the EU Intellectual Property Office (‘the EUIPO’).

“One IPO” Transformation

Many of us feel as though we have undergone some form of transformation over the course of this last extraordinary year. On 21 April 2021, the UK IPO proudly announced its own “One IPO” Transformation Programme – a five-year programme intended to transform Intellectual Property (IP) services and enhance the value that the IPO adds to the UK economy. As Amanda Solloway MP (Minister for Science, Research and Innovation) commented: “The UK already has a world leading IP environment, but a service for innovators must itself innovate.”
