Joe is based in Cambridge and handles patent work in the fields of engineering, manufacturing, and consumer products.
Joe re-joined Reddie & Grose in 2026, having previously worked at the firm from 2017 to 2022.
During his time away from Reddie & Grose, Joe gained in-house experience at a fast-paced scale-up developing holographic display systems, providing him with first-hand insight into the commercial and practical considerations involved in protecting innovation within a growing technology business. He subsequently joined the UK office of a Norwegian IP law firm, where he advised Norwegian clients ranging from start-ups to established businesses. This experience gave him a strong understanding of Norwegian business culture and familiarity with Norwegian national patent practice.
Joe advises clients ranging from start-ups and scale-ups to multinational companies on drafting and prosecuting patent applications across a broad range of technologies. He has particular expertise in photonics and advanced optical systems, with experience spanning holographic displays, waveguide optics, augmented reality, imaging technologies and optical communications. Alongside this, Joe has worked across a diverse range of technologies including medical devices, gene sequencing systems, x-ray inspection technology, high-voltage cable infrastructure, packaging, software and AI, electronic cigarettes, and oil and gas equipment. He also advises clients on freedom to operate, patent infringement and validity, and has experience of opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office.
Prior to entering the patent profession, Joe studied Physics at the University of York, where he completed an integrated Master’s degree. His final-year research project used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate structural changes in DNA following the binding of anti-cancer drugs.
Outside of work, Joe enjoys trying to keep up with his young children, experimenting in the kitchen, and fitting in the occasional run, swim or game of squash.
