Duncan handles patent work in the mechanical, electrical and consumer product fields and has extensive experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the UK, Europe and around the world.
Duncan has worked for individual inventors, but his main practice involves the management of an international patent portfolio for a large multinational corporation as well as the prosecution of European patent applications for various overseas clients. He regularly provides infringement opinions and clearance searches and has represented clients at Oral Proceedings, at the Examining Division, Opposition Division and Appeal Board levels of the European Patent Office.
In the course of two secondments totalling 19 months, Duncan gained first-hand experience of the role of an in-house patent counsel for a large multinational corporation in Switzerland. His work there involved advising various business groups of potential infringement risks for new product launches; assisting with strategic IP capture for new product designs and concepts; advising on commercially focused filing strategies and portfolio maintenance; and implementing new procedures for optimising workflow with external counsel.
