
Dr Dongyoung Kim joined Reddie & Grose in June 2019 and handles patents in the fields of semiconductors, photonics, optical components, aviation technologies, electronics and electrical engineering, and software.
His current work includes optical and photonic technologies, semiconductor materials, growth and fabrication processes, semiconductor devices, software-based innovations, and technologies used in aviation and transportation operations. Drawing on his research background in semiconductor photonics, he has particular expertise in compound semiconductors, epitaxial growth, nanostructures, optoelectronic devices, photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and photovoltaics (PV).
Dongyoung regularly delivers guest lectures on patents and intellectual property to engineering students at University College London (UCL), providing insight into the protection and commercialisation of innovation.
Dongyoung holds a PhD in Semiconductor Photonics and an MEng in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, both from UCL. During his studies, he undertook an industrial placement at IBM Hursley Laboratory, where he worked as a Test Engineer for server storage products. He also worked as an Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Engineer at Veolia Environmental Services’ material and energy recovery facilities (MRFs & ERFs), gaining experience in high-voltage (HV) power distribution and control systems. His master’s research project on the mechanical and electrical properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires was awarded the department’s prize for the best MEng project of the year.
His PhD research at UCL and the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN) focused on developing III-V semiconductor nanostructures for terrestrial and space photovoltaic (PV) applications. He subsequently spent a year as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist, working on the growth and fabrication of III-V quantum dot (QD) laser devices on silicon for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Two of his principal research projects were funded through the European Union’s Horizon 2020 (H2020) research and innovation programme and involved collaboration with leading research institutions across Europe. His research resulted in publications in internationally recognised conferences and scientific journals. Dongyoung is fluent in Korean and volunteered as an English-Korean interpreter for VIPs and athletes during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
