For each IP right we offer services covering strategic advice, pre-registration searches, registrations and renewals, oppositions and dispute resolution. We handle work throughout the world, working with local colleagues in over 100 countries.

Sectors

Our attorneys specialise in one or more sectors of industry, which enables them to provide quality advice with a commercial focus.

Our patent specialists have detailed understanding of the background technology, which ensures that your patent applications are prepared with the correct scope, reducing the likelihood of challenges from third parties and objections from the patent office.

They also advise whether other forms of protection would be more appropriate. Our brand specialists work with brand managers for leading brands and their advice is commercially focussed making sure that you get the best value from your budget.

Christopher Smith #

Senior Associate

London Office

Dr. Christopher Smith handles patents and registered designs in the electronics and software fields.

Chris joined Reddie & Grose in 2010 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2014. He works mainly in the electrical and computing fields.

Chris studied Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at Oxford University. During this time and before, he worked in the aerospace industry on the development of aircraft ejection seats and entry, descent and landing systems for space probes, including the Beagle 2 lander on the European Space Agency’s 2003 Mars Express mission.

Chris earned his PhD in the Offshore Engineering research group at Oxford University, developing new approaches to simulating wave mechanics and free-surface flows using techniques borrowed from signal processing such as wavelet transforms. His research included a focus on wave interactions with offshore structures of interest to the oil and gas industry including surface-piercing cylinders and floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels. Chris presented his research at conferences and in journals in the fields of offshore engineering and fluid mechanics. The research also led to articles in publications such as the International Journal of Numerical Methods in Fluids.

Chris spent a further couple of years at Oxford as a post-doctoral researcher developing a laser microscope capable of high-speed 3D imaging, picking up skills in optics, lasers and FPGA design along the way.

This extensive experience means that Chris has developed specialist knowledge in many different technical fields, including signal and image processing, optics, lasers, and fluid dynamics, on top of a broad engineering background.

Chris has drafted and prosecuted applications for patents and registered designs all over the world for individual inventors and multinational corporations, in technical fields such as telecommunications, audio and video coding, amplifiers and transformers, semiconductors, packaging and consumer products. He also has experience dealing with patent infringement and validity disputes.

When not in the office, Chris likes spy fiction, P. G. Wodehouse, pub quizzes and old film cameras.
