Andy Attfield is a patent attorney who handles cases across a wide range of sectors, including software, electronics, space, and telecoms.

After graduating with a Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Oxford, Andy joined Reddie & Grose in 2017 and qualified as a Chartered Patent attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2021. He is also a European Patent Litigator, qualified to act before the Unified Patent Court.

Andy has extensive experience prosecuting software patent applications before the European Patent Office and the UK Intellectual Property Office. Much of his work involves prosecuting patent applications in fields prone to receiving excluded subject matter objections from the European Patent Office such as AI, business and fintech.

Along with his prosecution experience, a large part of Andy’s practice is patent drafting, both for UK and European prosecution as well as US filings. He is responsive to the commercial ambitions of the client as well as the particular requirements and pitfalls of drafting for different jurisdictions and in different fields of technology.

Andy’s clients range from UK start-ups and SMEs to leading multinational technology companies. For his UK based clients, Andy advises on identifying and protecting IP and handles drafting and prosecution to develop and manage international IP portfolios, while for his overseas clients he provides practical advice for cost effective European and UK prosecution.

Within Reddie & Grose, Andy leads a team focussed on the emerging space sector. He has a particular interest in how the patent system interacts with the ever-growing space economy, both from a legal and practical point of view. He has written extensively on the topic and works with a variety of clients in the space sector, including start-ups, international satellite network providers, and government agencies.

While not working Andy is an outdoor enthusiast, enjoying rock climbing, kayaking, and mountaineering, amongst other activities.
